First off, thanks for reading this! This page is meant to serve as guidance for how people should use 17Lands data in their content in a way that aligns with our goals.
To be clear, we want people to use and share the numbers on our site. The mission we have stated right on our homepage is "to help the Magic: The Gathering community improve at limited". While we wish we didn't need a page like this, it's important to set some boundaries so that our site can continue to provide resources for the community to use far into the future.
These guidelines apply to usage of almost all curated data on our site. "Curated data" is any data accessible on our site that is aggregated from across our userbase. The most common curated data people like to draw from are the Card Data and Deck Color Data pages. Data that is not in scope for these guidelines includes (1) the data on our Public Datasets page (which is typically released under a CC BY 4.0 license), nor (2) data that is specific to an individual user (e.g. one person's win rate or a specific draft log).
These guidelines apply to any way in which you are using 17Lands data: quoting some numbers in a podcast, citing a color pair's win rate in an article, creating a visualization from our data, sharing an insight on a forum, etc.
If you're using our data, you must make it clear that the data comes from 17Lands. However, this citation must not imply that 17Lands endorses your product or findings. Please note that our name is stylized as "17Lands" (capital L).
As an example of how to cite us, in an article or podcast, you might say something like "According to data from 17Lands, blue-white has a 57.4% win rate" the first time you note a color pair win rate (no need to continue saying similar statistics come from 17Lands when referencing like data in the same piece).
If you maintain a site or tool that builds off of our data, you should make it clear at the introduction of your work that the data comes from 17Lands, including a link to the page(s) the data comes from (e.g. "Color-pair win rates retrieved from 17Lands"). Please keep this citation clearly visible at the top level, not hidden in a footnote or mouse-over.
It's important for the growth of our tool (and therefore our ability to continue providing our data to the community) that we drive traffic to our site. As such, for any third-party site or tool that is providing an alternative visualization of a data set that is directly accessible on our site, we request that you not provide such data for a new expansion until the 12th day it has been released on MTG Arena (typically the second Monday after the set release). Doing so ensures that the userbase our data sets come from can continue to grow during periods of high engagement with a set. For short-term specialty sets (e.g. cube draft, Double Feature, etc.), this period is reduced to 7 days.
Note that this embargo period does not apply to citations of individual numbers in articles, podcasts, etc. Feel free to talk about the unbelievable win rate of card X from day one.
Unless you've gotten explicit permission otherwise, we discourage automated scraping of our API, as it puts unnecessary load on our servers and potentially puts you in a position of violating the guidelines above. Unfortunately, people are going to ignore this, so we have some rate limiting in place, but we may also need to take appropriate action to secure our APIs if we see patterns of abuse (taking away development time from making the site even better for everyone else!). Furthermore, we provide no guarantees that any part of the API will remain consistent over any period of time.
Instead, we love when people make use of the public data dumps we provide to the community! They provide a lot more granular data, and we've seen many interesting analyses from them. Our intention is to publish these data sets on the following schedule:
While we’ve done our best to outline the ways we believe it is fair to use the data we provide, we reserve the right to request anyone stop using our data for any reason, even if it seems to fit within these guidelines. We hope it never comes to that, but you never know what situations might come up. Also note that these guidelines may change at any time.
If you've read this far, 17Lands is probably helping you in your content creation! If you're not a patron already, please consider supporting us on Patreon at patreon.com/17lands so that we can continue serving the community and content creators like you.
